Product description
Icon of the modern era
The Cobra made the Swedish designer Greta M. Grossman an
exceptionally great success. Because, when design connoisseurs become snake charmers, you can be sure that this famous lamp is in play.
Design enthusiasts around the world have their eye on this
timelessly beautiful lamp. The models from the 1940s and 1950s are
so popular that in 2012 such a vintage rarity was auctioned for a whopping US$ 20,000 (!) in New
York. Fortunately, you don’t
need to pay so much for this fascinating gem in our shop. Thanks to the reissue of this classic design you can purchase a
significantly more affordable model at dmlights.
Reissue
This classic Cobra table lamp was designed in 1947 by the Swedish
designer Greta Grossman. She received the prestigious
Good Design Award from the MoMA in New York for the Cobra lamp
series. The lamp then became part of the Good Design
exhibition. The Danish manufacturer Gubi has rediscovered this classic
fixture and produces it today in accordance with the
original Grossman design as an approved reissue.
Timeless extravagance
The oval lamp shade resembling the head of a
cobra gives the Cobra lamp its name. The designer and
interior architect Grossman, who counted
Frank Sinatra and Greta Garbo as regular customers in the 1950s, had
a preference for natural forms.
In addition to the shape, the subtle colours and
high-quality materials also match the original design.
Both the base and diffuser are covered with powder-coated
aluminium. The foot is weighted with a cast iron ballast
that provides the lamp with exceptional stability.
Variable
The Gubi Cobra is not only visually impressive with its extravagant lampshade. It also scores highly on the technical side because of the extremely adjustable light direction. The
flexible light arm on the Gubi Cobra can be tilted
and turned in all directions. The oval lampshade can also be rotated 360°,
so you can focus the light in any direction,
which makes it easier to work and considerably increases the variety of uses of this beautiful lamp.
This makes the Gubi Cobra an optimal reading lamp.
It is also equally well suited as an uplight for wall or
ceiling.
Other information
Optionally, the Gubi Cobra can be fitted with an energy-saving bulb
or a 230-volt halogen lamp and produces a pleasant,
even light.
The Gubi Cobra floor lamp is
available in five traditional colours that emphasise the character of this design icon.
In addition to the floor lamp, there is also a lovely Cobra lamp available
as a smaller table lamp. There are also two wall lights in the
Cobra lamp collection, which
makes it possible to light the room with
matching lamps.
By the way, this famous Cobra table lamp is being currently shown
in the Museum of Modern Arts in New York… and soon perhaps also
in your blessed abode!
